Serving initially as a commercial hub along the Ohio River and Erie Canal system, Akron later benefited from the emerging rail industry. Several industries had developed along the river by the late 1800s, including a rubber factory founded by B.F. Goodrich, taking off with advent of the automobile leading to Akron’s distinction as the world’s rubber capital. Akron attractions include the Quaker Square Complex, site of the original Quaker Oats factory now on the National Register of Historic Places, with a pie factory and other venues. Just outside Akron, outdoors enthusiasts enjoy the Cuyahoga Valley National Recreation Area’s 33,000 acres of forested hills with waterfalls along the river. True to its nickname, this City of Invention also is home to the annual All-American Soap Box Derby at Derby Downs, begun in the 1930s after a news photographer spotted three boys racing home-made engineless boxes on wheels down a steep hill. Canton and Stark County attractions include the Ohio & Erie Canal Corridor, the MAPS Air Museum, the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad and a wide variety of museums and entertainment venues.
